Shawn Murphy has created a much-needed survival guide for the unwary CCNA student, making his or her first foray into the oft-treacherous world of CCNA home lab acquisition, a world replete with eBay shysters hawking obsolete junk as CCNA home labs, and intenet swindlers adding a book of exercises to a collection of old Cisco routers and switches and calling it a home study kit.
I discovered this book after I had spent several weeks scouring ebay and the internet for advice and information on acquiring my own equipment, with little success. Guided by Murphy's sage advice, I was able to acquire an affordably-priced Cisco lab consisting of 3x 1841 routers, 2x 3560 switches, 1x 2950 switch, and a 2651XM router with a 16-port async card to act as a terminal server.
Murphy not only guides you in the selection of your equipment for the various CCNA programmes, he also subsequently assists you with its setup and operation, including advice on useful software, password recovery procedures, and IOS backup and recovery. Finally, as a CCNP himself, Murphy dispenses general advice on CCNA study, including recommended study materials and practices.
In summary, for the new self-study student, embarking on the CCNA programme without benefit of formal instruction or guidance, this book with prove invaluable. I therefore give it my unreserved recommendation.
